Learn to Swim
Islander Swim School philosophy is to teach life long swimmers. We believe in teaching swimmers the right way, the first time. We will establish a fun and safe environment, so that swimmers will feel comfortable.
We strive to keep a 1:4 teacher to student, classes will help swimmers feel relaxed in the water.
Skills range from floating, kicking, breathing techniques, freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke.
Our learn to swim program, for swimmers 3-8 years old, consists of 4 levels:
Beginner
Level 1
Our beginner level 1 with a focus on independent forward progression. Focus will be on gross motor skills appropriate for swimming. Skills taught will include going underwater, independent floats (back and front) and swimming independently for approximately 35-40 feet whilst demonstrating a basic “Freestyle” stroke coordination.
Level 2
Our second beginner level 2 is for students who are already comfortable and confident in the water. Students must be able to swim 35 feet independently. Focus will be on increasing distance for Freestyle to one length (70 feet) and an intro to Backstroke. To pass this level students must be able to swim both Freestyle and Backstroke one length of the lessons pool.
Intermediate
Level 3
Our first intermediate level 3 is for students who who can already swim Freestyle and Backstroke. Focus will be on learning rotary breathing (for Freestyle) and learning proper breastroke kick technique. Passing this level requires that students demonstrate Freestyle and Backstroke for three laps as well as proper breastroke kick for two laps.
Level 4
Our second intermediate level 4 is focused on completing the Breaststroke ‘pull’ and putting both leg and arm coordination together. To pass from this level students need to demonstrate proficient knowledge of Freestyle, Backstroke and Breastroke for three laps.
